Learning and Curriculum

Rationale

The curriculum has been organised and established in consultation with all teaching staff. It is regularly reviewed and developed in accordance with DfE guidelines, the School Improvement Plan, recommendations from OFSTED and following consultation with Governors, parents, children and teaching staff.

Our broad, rich and engaging curriculum links to our school values of Hope, Resilience and Friendship. We are committed to providing children with the knowledge that allows them to contribute to a wide range of discussions and therefore develop into strong, resilient, knowledgeable and empathetic citizens of the future.

History, Geography, Art and Design Technology are taught through themes and we complement these with enrichment activities such as organising trips and visitors to school.

Along with the vital knowledge that children are equipped with, we ensure that skills are built upon for future learning.

Please see our curriculum maps for further information about what each individual class are learning this year.

In the Summer term we run our successful Aspirations Programme which encourages children in Years 4, 5 and 6 to think about their future goals, by providing them with opportunities to meet with adults from a range of backgrounds. These could be University students, successful business people or adults from a range of professions.

Planning and Assesment

Teachers plan the work of the school yearly, weekly and daily. Planning is based on children's needs. Teachers are constantly assessing as they ask questions in lessons and look at work in progress. Teachers use our assessment system Target Tracker as well as marking to inform next steps in children’s learning. We also value assessments where the children are tested against national standards. At the ages of 7 and 11 the children do Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) during the summer term of Years 2 and Year 6. The results show their level of attainment in English, Mathematics and Science as set against national standards. Every child is discussed in pupil progress meetings each half term and catch up / extension is identified.

Children in Year 1 have a statutory phonics test in June. They are required to read a set of words aloud to their class teacher. If children do not meet the threshold, they have another opportunity to do so in Year 2.

You will be invited to meet your child’s class teacher once a term to discuss progress and targets on a regular basis.
